Glossary of medical terms

Absence

Seizure type most often seen in children. Shows itself by momentary unconsciousness, possibly with twitching of the face, upward eye rolling and loss of grasp.

Allergy

An oversensitive reaction to medicine or other substances. Most commonly seen as a rash.

Anamnesis

Case history.

Astatic seizure

Seizure which causes sudden loss of muscle tension, at which the person falls down and often injures himself. The same as drop attacks.

Atonic seizure

Aura

Short warning that a generalized seizure is on the way. An aura is a simple partial seizure, which gives various different sensory phenomena.

Automatism

Things one does during a seizure in a state of diminished consciousness, often pulling at one's own clothes.

Blind trial

Trial where neither patient nor doctor knows which treatment is being given, drug or placebo.

Callosotomy

Operation for epilepsy where the connection between the two halves of the brain is cut through.

CT-scan

X-ray examination which, with the help of computer technique, produces slice-shaped cross-sections of the organ being examined.

Dementia

Acquired reduction of mental abilities

Deja vu

Unknown things or situations seem suddenly familiar

Diagnostic treatment

Trial treatment with antiepileptic drugs of a person when it is has not been possible to ascertain for certain if the person suffers from epilepsy.

EEG

Registration of the electrical activity of the brain with the help of electrodes placed on the scalp.

Enzyme

A substance that stimulates chemical processes.

Enzyme induction

Stimulating of the liver's enzyme systems, so that medicine and other substances are broken down faster than normally.

Epileptic focus

Area in the brain which triggers the epileptic activity.

Epileptic syndrome

Age-linked epilepsy in which a group of different symptoms make up the picture of the illness.

GABA

Gamma-amino-butyric acid, an inhibitory neurotransmitter.

Photosensitive epilepsy

Form of epilepsy where seizures can be provoked by blinking light
